W. Weschenfelder & Sons have been in the sausage making business since 1921. Today the business is run by Tim and John Weschenfelder, the fourth generation to have run the business since Ludwig Weschenfelder arrived in the UK from Nuremberg in 1898. Ludwig Weschenfelder originally found work as a butchers apprentice in Middlesbrough, working with his uncle, a German pork butcher. In 1905 he married Lisa Schumm, another German immigrant, also working in a German pork butcher with her brother! Ludwig moved into the sausage casing business before the First World War using skills handed down from his German family. He was interned on the Isle of Man during the war and on his release returned to Middlesbrough in 1921 to put the fledgling business on a firm footing. Today the company produces thousands of miles of sausage casings and supplies a wide range of sausage making equipment, seasonings and expertise to home and professional users worldwide. |
